According to the Daily News on August 31st, Zanzibar is leveraging a comprehensive port modernization and expansion plan to build itself into the next important trade and logistics center in East Africa. The government claims that this move will create unprecedented opportunities for shipping, commerce, tourism, and regional connectivity. This multi billion shilling initiative, led by the government of President Hussein Mwiny, aims to integrate Zanzibar's ports into a unified integrated system that can handle international cargo, fish landings, petroleum products, passenger ferries, and cruise operations. Dr. Khalid Sarum Mohammed, Minister of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, stated that the preparations for the comprehensive renovation of the main ports on Angonga Island and Pemba Island are progressing smoothly. Mr. Akif Ali Hamis, Director General of Zanzibar Ports Corporation (ZPC), stated that the government has initiated transformative port reforms that will allow domestic and international shipping companies to directly dock in Zanzibar, thereby reducing costs and promoting trade development. Akif explained, "These new facilities are built to modern standards, capable of accommodating large cargo ships and passenger ships, and equipped with advanced loading and unloading equipment." He specifically mentioned that the port of Mangapurani has been designated as an international trade gateway.
