According to Monitor on July 22nd, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has signed a public-private partnership agreement (PPPA) with Bukona Agricultural Processing Co., Ltd. and the local government of Nwoya region to implement the national biofuel blending plan officially launched by the government this month. The plan aims to reduce Uganda's dependence on imported fossil fuels by mixing locally produced ethanol with gasoline. This transition to clean energy is expected to promote sustainable environmental development, create rural employment opportunities, and provide a stable market for agricultural products such as sugarcane and cassava. The new hybrid facility is worth over 2 billion shillings and will be constructed by Bukona Agricultural Processing Limited on 8.5 acres of land in Asinge Ward, Malaba Town Council, Tororo District. At the signing ceremony on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Hatimu Muyanja, an energy official representing the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, delivered a speech. Irene Pauline Bateebe stated that this project is an important milestone for Uganda to achieve energy self-sufficiency and climate adaptation capabilities.
