According to the latest regulations formulated by the Kenyan government, almost all packaged food and beverages sold by local and international companies in Kenya must come with a health declaration label. Kenya released its nutritional profile model this month and promised to use it for developing packaging front labels. A report from the non-profit organization Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI) reveals that under these new regulations, 90% of products sold by international companies such as Coca Cola and Nestle, as well as local companies such as Brookside Dairy and Manji Food Industries, contain excessive amounts of salt, sugar, or saturated fat. ATNI has previously tracked products globally and in countries such as the United States and India, but the reports from Kenya and Tanzania are the first such investigations conducted in African countries. The non-profit organization found last year that the world's largest food and beverage companies sold products with lower average health levels in poorer countries compared to products sold in wealthier countries.
