According to Monitor on May 21st, Uganda has a relatively small trade deficit with the world in international trade, but a significant trade deficit with member countries of the East African Community. According to official data, the trade deficit with other regions of the world has decreased from $379 million in March last year to $213 million in March 2025, a decrease of $183 million or 46.3%. Although the import volume has increased, according to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, the growth in export volume is more significant. In the April 2025 Monthly Performance Report, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry pointed out that "export revenue increased by 40.6%, effectively offsetting the 7.3% increase in import revenue for the month." The export value of goods increased from 639 million US dollars in the same period last year to 899 million US dollars in March 2025, mainly due to the increase in export revenue of coffee, cocoa beans, minerals, sugar, fish and fish products. Of particular note is that due to the rise in international coffee prices and the increase in export volume, coffee exports have surged from $64.74 million in March 2024 to $198 million in March 2025, achieving more than double growth.
