As the Kenyan government prepares to implement new waste management regulations, consumers will face a significant increase in the prices of packaged goods, with diapers, sanitary napkins, and detergents expected to be the most severely affected. The National Environmental Management Agency (NEMA) plans to implement the 2024 Sustainable Waste Management (Extended Producer Responsibility) Regulations from February 3, despite warnings from the private sector that the industry is not yet prepared. This regulation will add additional costs to manufacturers, importers, and retailers. It requires all participants in the value chain to be responsible for the entire lifecycle of their products, including post consumer waste management and environmental impact, which will also bring additional costs. These regulations involve products such as plastic, paper, glass, metal and aluminum packaging, electronic products, batteries, motor vehicles, tires, etc.
