Africa has become the fastest-growing destination for Chinese construction machinery, with export value reaching USD 3.88 billion in the first four months of 2026 — a year-on-year increase of 59.1%, far outpacing growth to any other continent.
The surge spans every major equipment category. According to customs data, excavator exports to Africa grew 54% year-on-year, while wheel loaders rose 49%, truck cranes 67%, bulldozers 40%, tower cranes 155%, concrete machinery 58%, and forklifts 53%.
South Africa, Nigeria, and Guinea all ranked among the top-ten destinations for Chinese excavator exports. South Africa alone imported over USD 102 million worth of Chinese excavators between January and April 2026 — nearly double the figure for the same period in 2025.
Industry analysts attribute the boom to two structural drivers. First, mining: approximately 75% of excavator demand in Africa comes from copper, gold, and lithium operations, and new resource projects in Guinea, Mali, Nigeria, and the DRC have moved into full development since 2025. Second, infrastructure: the World Bank estimates Africa's annual infrastructure investment gap at USD 130–170 billion, and the equipment import dependency rate exceeds 90%.
For African contractors and importers, the message is clear: supply is abundant, delivery cycles are shortening, and competition among exporters is improving pricing and after-sales terms across the board.
